You’ve persuaded me to go see it! I love your description of the “sugar-exaggerated battle of cruelty and compassion waging within all of us.” And how King is trying to world-build towards something much more hopeful than the world we can fathom right now.
Christine! Thank you! Yes, I honestly felt so much hope waiting off the screen, where he can make up his own story? Does that make sense? I think that's where I feel hope for all of us.
I didn't have much interest in seeing this before I read your take on it, Meg--I also loathe prequels. Now, however, I'm intrigued! I would like to be delighted!!!😄
I deeply appreciate your desire to have new stories, springing from an evolution away from embedded racism and capitalistic colonial overshrouds. The new do have to be delightful! I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book (before the 71 movie was made, which I adored as a 11 year old in the original release) - kids like dark mixed in with imaginative mischief.... new stories! Who is a new Dahl without the racism? Hmmmm...thanks Meg for another thought-provoking read!
I love the dark too! Childhood has A LOT of darkness! So it makes sense for the stories we tell children to contain darkness. But I agree that Dahl wrote with a kind of meanness too. More meanness than darkness, I think. And that manifests so many ways - his antisemitism, his racism, his misogyny, his apparent hatred of most of his characters!
I can’t wait to see it with my kids over break! And I fell in love with the chalamet in don’t look up - so apparently I’m still into the bad boy 😅
There is truly one scene in the movie that just…it’s so lovely. And ha!

You’re a brilliant writer as always, Meg!

I love the image of that. Yes it does make sense!!

There is one scene Roxy that just...woah. Can't wait to hear what you think about it.
