Ugh, that photo of Elmo and the bro party... I know it’s Midjourney, but it’s really not, is it? You nailed the HS party scene. I was a working poor kid so the couple parties in the β€˜burbs I went to, were a mistake. Sad thing is, they are the same in my 30s, 40s... and I quit hobnobbing with these kids of people, even though outwardly I am able to fit in, my insides wretch with disgust.... Easter dinner on Sunday, I couldn’t exit fast enough.

Notes does feel like a space to breathe, to just be... the cynic in me wonders how long it will last... it seems even the folks with the best intentions eventually just want to harvest us.

Oh I am sure I’ll be truly disappointed about Notes at some point in some way!

It seems impossible so far to opt out of Notes notifications in the app, despite the settings for notifications, which I turned all to off. My notifications are still flooded by people from the newsletters I subscribe to. Soooo...

I got lost in the weeds of Notes, but was nodding along during the entire reading. This:

β€œI’m so angry at Musk and every man like him.” Yes and Yes. I resist leaving Twitter because I loved being able to hear the discourse of important topics by thoughtful (and some spicy) people. I HATE what Elon has done. I despise his snark, his attitudes and his values.

I will leave.

So many of the people I follow on Twitter now have substacks, but I can’t afford to support all of them, and quite frankly, I don’t have time to read all of the long form newsletters. One thing I will miss about Twitter is the brevity. I also really miss the 140 character tweet limit. One had to be succinct and clever. So sad it’s gone.

I am sorry Notes was confusing! I think they’ll make it easier to get through as it develops. It’s got the short-form potential you’re talking about, and I’m really looking forward to that.

The way I’m treating supporting others’ work is I’m picking a budget and getting as many people supported through that budget as I can.

When that budget is used up, I’m supporting other writers I read through sharing their work. I’m thinking Notes will be a very good way to do the latter.

And I’m with you in truly mourning what Elon has done to Twitter. It’s truly such a big tragedy in so many little ways.

If NPR is leaving Twitter, that’s good enough for me. I was on Twitter for actual news/journalists, and Mormon Twitter. But like you said, I’m not seeing a lot of the people I follow anymore.

Also it seems like I can post even if I don’t have a newsletter? And I can follow people who also don’t have a newsletter.

Yes! To both!

I’m mourning Twitter. I haven’t left yet, but it’s not the website I signed up for anymore. Without it, I wouldn’t have some of the most important people in my life (or read homeculture)!

I really am so sad about everything that’s been lost there. I wouldn’t have my career without it! Or know you! Or so many other people!

I left Twitter when it was announced that Elon Musk was to purchase it. I didn't have much of a presence on there anyway, so didn't lose much, but I did miss seeing what people I followed would tweet. I'm liking these Notes so far, and love that you're here!!! xo

I’m liking them so far too! And I’m also so glad you’re here!

I'll be honest, I'm uneasy about substack attempting to nab Twitter marketshare (but good riddance to Twitter, don't get me wrong) because I'm uneasy about substack anyway. The founders consistently refuse to deplatform or regulate newsletters that focus on antitrans content that reaches into hate speech. They tend to claim its not an issue because they also have contracts with some prominent trans writers. But that's some both sides bs. I subscribe to a lot of substacks because this is where the people I want to read are, but I'm an unenthusiastic user. I don't trust substack to take care of its users if it gets in the way of its money.

I’m somewhat Substack agnostic at this point. I left it for just the reasons you detail, I came back last year after a few people I really trust were like, β€œYou can have your morals and reach no one, or you can organize good community in imperfect places.” I was especially humbled when a few Black writers I really respect were like, β€œMeg, where would we write if we avoided all platforms with problematic politics that directly hurt us? Nowhere.” And so then it felt clear to me I needed to become slightly less ideological about platforms, while always pushing for change. Doesn’t mean there’s nothing Substack could do to make me leave, just means it’s not there right now. (Or yet?) I don’t personally see Notes as a Twitter competitor. (I almost wish it was, as I miss old Twitter. But I don’t think it’s ever coming back.) It really does feel like a new thing, that mostly works best for people already engaging with communities on Substack. But we will definitely see how it goes. In a perfect world, I have the resources to build out my own little digital island with community features, audio, visual, ways to amplify to work (whatever it is! Paid or unpaid!) of my readers and ways to recommend and interact with writers in other places, but....I’ve not found a perfect world yet. There’s a big part of me that hopes we get to all build that together someday, but someday isn’t yet. 😭πŸ₯Ή

Yeah, I don't think your position and mine are mutually exclusive. And platforms are just neutral tools for users to do what they want with. But I think platforms can do better about harm than substack currently does.

Ooof, Meg I just checked out your note about content moderation and the comments on that are out of control. As a person not on Twitter, its really shocking to have all that start showing up in my inbox. Just screaming about wokeness and echo chambers and people on the left being reverse racist. I have no interest in jumping into a screaming contest with people who would prefer me dead or docile in that order. And i find it difficult to let their words stand without fighting back. But i have a life i have to live and things to get done, i can't spend all day arguingon the internet. So i have no interest in jumping into the conversation on that note, which is why i came back here to leave this comment. The responses to your note and that verge interview do not fill me with confidence. Or interest in engaging with the platform, tbh.

Now that you’ve left twitter I m not certain where to send you interesting tweets πŸ˜‰ like this one about universal basic income (I believe you’ve written about the need for UBI, or am I hallucinating again? Reading so many substacks...)

Can I send it to you in Notes? But only as a comment on something else that you’ve Noted?

Ever since clearing my browser cache and cookies I can't login to Instagram. Is there some new blocking in place? I have one device that still has access to my account (which is private), and I reset my pswd from there, but a I still can't login from other devices nor get a pswd reset email. Perhaps it's time to abandon Instagram.
