My younger son was like your Margaret - always crying when he had to say goodbye to visiting relatives, or relatives we were visiting. His best friend since birth moved to New Zealand when they were 8 and I remember just sitting with Hugh in his bed that night while he cried and cried. I’m so glad I was able to take him to NZ two years later so they could see each other again.

I love not-goodbye. I actually end all my interactions with "see you" for a similar reason (the reason is anxiety).
