I love your mother in law’s sex education for her soon-to-be-married son SO MUCH. Bless.

I also appreciate that it was Mimi’s. When I was grown with kids of my own, I would drive to SoCal to visit my family. My mom and my aunts (her sisters-in-law) and before her death, my grandma would meet for birthday lunches four or five times a year at Mimi’s. I was always so pleased to join them if the timing worked out. I could always count on a club sandwich (or did they have a Reuben?)

Thank you for the memories.

I...can't believe this experience is not just mine. That is, I went to Mimi's as a kid, thought it was the fanciest thing I'd ever seen, and was enamored. I felt so sophisticated. I think the one I went to was in Duarte, which was kind of far away, but we went for a birthday party. I got a grilled cheese and it had four cheeses. Four! So many!

Many many years later, when my own little family was living in San Jose, there was a Mimi's there, and we went there for Mother's Day. I was so excited to relive my four cheese experience. And it wasn't the same. They didn't even have the grilled cheese anymore. The food sucked and it was packed for Mother's Day and the family at the table next to ours was having a Lockhorns style meltdown. Nothing like hearing people express their contempt for each other while eating terrible food in a noisy crowded restaurant on Mother's Day! I wish I could recapture the Mimi's of youth, but alas, nothing gold (and grilled) can stay.

The hot chocolate came in a beautiful mug with tons of whipped cream and it had a cookie straw in it.
